Miami: pre-qualifying 2022

Not a fan of countries having two races, whether it’s Imola or Miami, but here we are.

I saw a video of a car going round the track. It looks too narrow in multiple places and barriers are close so I’m expecting a minimum of one red flag in qualifying and DNFs in the race due to that.

First practice had Leclerc top of the standings, less than a tenth ahead of Russell, with Verstappen just a tenth further back. Perez was only two-hundredths off his team mate, with Gasly two-tenths back and narrowly ahead of Sainz. Albon (!), Hamilton, Magnussen, and Ricciardo rounded out the top 10.

In second practice, Russell went one better and topped the timesheets, a tenth ahead of Leclerc. Perez was next, a tenth further back, and just three-hundredths ahead of Hamilton. Looking good for Mercedes so far. Alonso was two-tenths down the road, with Norris, Gasly, Zhou Guanyu, Ocon, and Magnussen following.

So far, Mercedes look value for qualifying with 9 for Russell and 15 for Hamilton. I’ve backed both, splitting a single stake, each way (third the odds top 2). Might turn out to look silly but they do seem to be in more competitive shape.

Third practice is at 6pm UK time and qualifying starts at 9pm, so I’ve decided to put this up early.
